Data protection is a fundamental right under EU legislation and is comprised of three Key Legal Acts:

  • GDPR: The General Data Protection Regulation (Regulation EU 2016/679) regulates all commercial and public data processing.
  • LED: The Law Enforcement Directive governs data handling by police and criminal justice authorities.
  • EUDPR: The Data Protection Regulation for EU institutions, bodies, offices and agencies ensures EU bodies themselves follow strict privacy standards.

For Moldova data protection is governs by Law No. 195/2024 on Personal Data Protection (in force from 23.08.2026).

This law transposes Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 (GDPR) on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data.
