Local public administration is a set of local public authorities created in accordance with the law to protect the general interests of the population of a separate administrative-territorial unit.

Local public administration bodies of the first level are a set of public authorities created and operating on the territory of a village (commune), city (municipality) to protect the interests and solve the problems of local communities;

Local public administration bodies of the second level are a set of public authorities created and operating on the territory of a district, the municipalities of Chisinau and Balti to protect the interests and solve the problems of the population of the corresponding administrative-territorial unit;

Local public administration bodies of a special level – the People's Assembly, the Head and the Executive Committee, established and operating on the territory of the autonomous territorial entity of Gagauzia, which has a special level of government for resolving issues of a political, economic and cultural nature in the interests of the entire population;

Mayor – representative authority of the population of the administrative-territorial unit and the executive authority of the local council, elected on the basis of universal, equal and direct suffrage by secret and free vote;
